Jose Cuervo is the first official tequila ever made and is the world’s most widely distributed tequila. Jose Cuervo Especial (mixto) is the world’s most recognised tequila and is their highest selling product. Thanks to it’s head start and position in the market, Jose Cuervo has made itself one of, if not the strongest brand of Tequila around the world, sponsoring sporting events, parties, special collaborations and tequila education the world over. Jose Cuervo accounted for 33% of global sales in 2017. Jose Cuervo is majority owned by the company Becle S.A.B. de C.V. however it joined the stock exchange in 2017, making it the first tequila company in history to float on the stock market.
Jose Cuervo creates a range of tequila’s including Gold, Silver, Anejo and Extra Anejo and range from £15 – £2,500 a bottle. They also create special edition bottles from time to time including Jose Cuervo Black, bottles designed by Ricardo Cavolo, Carlos Campos, and The Rolling Stones and also unusual craft collaborations including a Fender guitar, Funky Buddha beer and Ford car parts!
Founded in 1795, Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo y Montana used land given to his father Jose Antonio de Cuervo y Valdes by King Ferdinand of Spain, some 40 years prior, to create the a type of mezcal within the township of Tequila. At the time the word “Tequila” was nothing but the name of a town in central Mexico in the state of Jalisco. “Vino Mezcal de Tequila” was the first iteration of what we would now know to be Tequila of any brand. This “Mezcal Wine of Tequila” was given the first charter by King Carlos of Spain to produce Tequila commercially.
In 1852, Jose Cuervo became the first Tequila to be distributed outside of the US and is credited with clearing the path for other distilleries to distribute worldwide. Arguably, without Jose Cuervo, we would not have the wonderful beverage to enjoy the world over.
